I love flying. I’m that person who gets exited when what you thought was an 8 hour flight turns out to be 10. Oh the joy! Freakish? Well, maybe, but evidently longer flights brings me further away from home and so far it has never disappointed. Not that I’m sat squirming in my seat through painfully long hours. Oh no, to be on this flight is utter delight. “Sit back, relax and enjoy your flight” Well thank you dear stewardess, don’t mind if I do! So I read my book, watch a movie, have a little nap and as the food addict I am, I wait in anticipation for my meals. Come on guys, if you’ve been flown by a proper airline, the food ain’t that bad! Before you know it, it’s time to straighten up that seat and prepare for landing cause you have arrived at your destination! The lingering disappointed that the flight is almost over is quickly replaced when I look out the window. There’s the layout of my new conquest!
At this particular flight on the 16th of September, I was blinded by Florida’s beaming lights as we were descending into Hollywood int. Airport in Fort Lauderdale. I have to admit, I’ve never been a big ‘US of the A lover’ and of my many many trips abroad only once have I voluntarily booked a flight to the states (New York, I love you). However, as I was pleasantly surprised again after my time in Florida, I think scepticism must be put aside, the big Americas is quite the place!
8 p.m local time, very early hours Norwegian time, I couldn’t be bothered to take the public bus even if someone paid me to. I jumped in the first available taxi and headed for Deauville Hotel on North Ocean Blvd. Deciding to stay in a 4 bed dorm to save some money, I was pleasantly surprised when I was given a six bed dorm all to myself and I got a good night sleep to make the Jet-lag a little less tiring. Just to say a couple of things about the hotel. Except from the unmistakable smell of marihuana upon arrival, this was a great place to rewind for a day or two and the manager, Dennis, was really helpful and made sure I had everything I needed. Thumbs up!!
I spent 2 days, 3 nights in sunny Florida, but instead of enjoying a couple of relaxing days by one of the most beautiful coastlines I’ve ever seen, I took on the mission to hunt down something I wanted to treat myself to for my year abroad; A GoPro camera.
Do you know how they say that everything is big in America? Well it freakin is! And do you KNOW how annoying it is when Walmart announces that they have a GoPro in store and you pay $35 taxi fare (one way!!) just to get there to find out, no, no they don’t. And don’t even get me started on the disappointment after walking sideways, longways, up and down, back and forth in 35 degrees to finally find a shop that; yes, indeed have GoPro’s, but “unfortunately we are out of stock”!?!?! Oh, for the love of all that is electronics, I just wanted a GoPro!!!! It didn’t help finding a public bus outside the shop that could’ve taken me on my ridiculous wasted Walmart trip for $1.75. At least I got home cheap enough. After a day like THAT I literally gave up and thought; “well, it doesn’t look like I’m suppose to have a GoPro in my possession”. Simples. So I left it to fate and to this day I am still longing for one.
But, fear not! I did get to spend money on a electronic product after all! On my first day I walked 1hr 20min to get to a Macy’s shop and happily spent some hundred dollars on new clothes for my days hiking volcanos. It was on my way out that a lady in the beauty department caught me looking at a clarisonic (look it up if you care) and from that point on it was pretty clear she had sold it to me. So 30 minutes later after much convincing from her and another random clarisonic user, I walked out of Macy’s excited to try my new product after a ’24 hours first time charge’. 1hr 20min later I had walked back to my hotel and unpacked my new wonder and shoved the charger in the wall and waited for the LED light to start flashing. It didn’t take me as long as I sat there waiting for the light to come on, to realise that ‘ah of course, I have bought a faulty item’. That was so convenient when I only had one more day in Florida. So the next day, wrapped up in my hunt for a GoPro, I also had the delightful walk back to Macy’s to swap my clarisonic and, oh so joyfully, walk back to my heavenly air conditioned room.
That, plus a couple of Starbucks frappuccino, a beautiful sunrise, a painful blister and ALOT of sweat, pretty much sums up my time in Florida. Why didn’t you use public transport you say?! Well, comfortably seated on my flight to Costa Rica, I wondered the same thing after I used an equivalent of the price of a GoPro on taxi fares. And here I was, still empty handed…
